How The Camel Got His Hump Class 8th: Summary

The poem is a story about how a camel got its hump on its back. The poet of the poem says that it all started when the animals started to work as beasts of burden. There was a camel who lived in the middle of the desert.

He used to eat the thorns of cacti and sticks and paid no heed to the humans. Whenever any human asked him something, he would just humph! On a fine Monday morning, the horse went to him. he told him to come out but as usual he said humph.

The horse told this to the man and after some time a dog came and asked him to work.  But again the camel said only humph. For everything, he said only humph and remain like this lazily. Later on, an Ox came to him, and as per his habit, he replied humph.

Meanings of words and phrases:

  • idleness: laziness
  • puffing up: growing bigger
  • hump: a round raised part on an animal’s back
  • saddle: a seat, usually made of leather, used on a horse
  • trot: gait of animals like horse
  • yoke: a wooden bar that is tied over the necks of two animals, especially cattle, and connected to the vehicle or load that they are pulling
  • edge: the outside limit of an area
  • cud: partly digested food returned from the first stomach of ruminating animals to the mouth for further chewing

Comprehension

Question 1: What tasks, do you think, were assigned to the dog and the ox? 

Answer: 

The dog was entrusted with the task of fetching and carrying things in its mouth while the ox had a yoke around its neck and was required to plow the fields for agriculture. 

Question 2: Why did the camel live in the middle of the desert?

Answer: The camel lived in the middle of the desert because he did not want to work. 

Question 3: What made the dog, the horse, and the ox very angry?

Answer: As the camel was not working, the man thought that it is incapable of doing any work and thus asked the other three animals to work double to make up for the idleness of the camel. This made the three very angry. 

Question 4: How did the Djinn know the horse was complaining against the camel? 

Answer: The horse described the physical appearance of the camel and also told the djinn that the thing (camel) has not done any work since Monday morning. This made the djinn realize that the horse was talking about the djinn’s camel. 

*Comprehension

 Question 1: The camel was looking at his own reflection in the pool. What does it suggest to you about the camel?

Answer: The camel was looking at its own reflection in the water when the djinn arrived to talk to him. This suggests that the camel was very self-involved and took pride in his vanity. 

Question 2: The camel said, “Humph” repeatedly. How did it affect him? 

Answer: 

The camel was used to saying ‘Humph’ to everyone when he was asked to work; he did the same with the djinn as well which enraged the djinn and he gave the camel a hump in response to his ill behavior. 

Question 3: What, according to the Djinn, was the use of the ‘humph’? 

Answer: The djinn told the camel that as he had missed the first three days of work, he would be able to live and work without eating for three days. This meant that the camel could live off the nutrition stored in his hump for three days. 

Question 4: “.… he was never yet learned to behave.” In light of this, what is the writer’s opinion about the camel?

Answer: The final phrase seems to indicate that the author still thinks that the camel is an idle animal and does not like to work. Also, it indicates that the author believes that the camel is yet to understand how to behave properly amongst others.

Question 1: Can this story be factually true? 

Answer: 

This story is a tool for moral teaching and can’t b factually true as it involves talking animals and the djinn. These things do not exist in the real world. 

Question 2: What according to you, is the story about? (i) How the world began. (ii) Why everyone should do his/her share of work seriously. (iii) How animals are important to humans. (iv) How the camel got his hump.

Answer: The story talks about the camel not doing his share of work and behaving erratically with others. In response to his wrongdoings, he got a punishment in form of a hump. This indicates that every person should do his/her share of work seriously. 

Question 3: What did you do over the weekend? Were you generally active or idle? Please check your back before starting to discuss or answer the question. 

Answer: On the weekend, I got up late. I watched my favorite TV series and played cricket in the afternoon.
